| Zoos in Gharial
Conservation: WAZA Gharial Resolution Accepted |

Thanks to the efforts of GCA member Dr. Ivan
Rehak of the Prague Zoo, the World Association
of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA) has voted to adopt a
Gharial Resolution. This resolution acknowledges
the serious conservation crisis facing the
gharial, pledges support of the WAZA for gharial
conservation efforts, and encourages WAZA
members to likewise support gharial
conservation.

and Aquaria (EAZA) Reptile and Amphibian
Taxon Advisory Group coordinator, presented the
proposal at the WAZA Annual Meeting held in
Budapest from 26-30th August 2007. With great
support of the WAZA Executive Director, Dr.
Peter Dollinger, the WAZA Council accepted to
include Dr. Rehak’s proposal of the WAZA
Gharial Resolution in the agenda.
Dr. Rehak presented detailed introductory
information about the Gharial
Extinction Crisis during a plenary session,
which was accepted with great interest. The
proposal of the WAZA Gharial Resolution was
endorsed and conference delegates (without any
opposition) accepted it.
Several zoo directors immediately contacted Dr.
Rehak showing their interest in supporting
gharial conservation.
The detailed paper on the gharial crisis will be
published in the WAZA
Proceedings. |
